Bali’s heartland is a fascinating area with spectacular scenery and a very rich culture and history.
A short drive from Ubud is Gunung Kawi, a spectacular royal grave carved into the side of a cliff over 900 years ago- a place steeped in spirituality, magic and mysticism. From here we drive to Tirta Empul holy springs. Also steeped in history and religion, This is a place of pilgrimage for Balinese from all over the island.
Gradually we enter the cooler highlands where coffee is grown. We will stop to sample some home grown coffee and watch the coffee making process from tree to cup. Finally we reach the breath-taking volcanic landscape of Mt. Batur. A huge crater more than 10km across contains a lake and a smaller volcano, Bali’s most active. It is possible to drive into the crater across the lava fields to some hot springs. Lunch will be served on the crater rim overlooking the whole panorama. For those who are interested, a visit to the UNESCO volcano museum can also be included.
